Man killed because of "honor": Prison sentences handed down

Jahedi is 19 years old and is from Iran. Mohammad A. is 16 years old and is from Afghanistan.

Another Afghan (whose real name is not given) allegedly called an acquaintance of the Iranian a "slut." Perhaps other things happened. Either way, on February 7, 2022, the two beat him up with wooden clubs in a park in Neubrandenburg and kicked him in the head. He dies 11 days later in the hospital.

The perpetrators are arrested near the scene. In August, the trial for joint murder based on "honor" begins at the Neubrandenburg Regional Court. In October, the verdict speaks of bodily harm resulting in death and a juvenile sentence: the Iranian is sentenced to 4.5 years in prison, his accomplice to 3 years and 9 months.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
