62-year-old man murders his wife in Hanover

Gülüsan T.
born: 1965
stabbed to death: June 8, 2022
Residence: Hanover
Origin: unclear
Children: no common ones
Perpetrator: her husband Osman T. (62 years old at the time of the crime)
After the murder, Osman steals money, gold and jewelry from his wife and sends it to his children. If so, greed would be a motive. It is said that Gülüsan came from Turkey and married Osman. Immediately after she got her residence permit, she allegedly wanted to divorce him. Which Osman probably sees as cheating. Or it's a made-up motive. Maybe Gülüsan just wants to divorce her husband, which Osman won't accept.

Which brings us to the honor. The couple met in Turkey around 2019. Presumably, they both have children from previous relationships. Osman works for Volkswagen in Hanover. Gülüsan moves in with him.

On June 8, 2022, he stabs her to death with 18 knife wounds. Then he gets drunk and calls the police. When the police officers are at the door, he approaches them, presumably to get himself shot. The policeman remains unharmed.

In December 2022, the trial begins at the Hanover Regional Court. An audio file of the crime is found on the victim's cell phone. The attack on the police officer is also being tried as attempted murder.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
